Have you ever wanted a quick resource for calculating Depth of Field?
How about just quickly finding the Hyper Focal Length?
Maybe you've always wondered, which will give me more depth of field a 200mm lens at f/2.8 or a 300mm lens at f/5.6?
How about quickly finding the Angle of View for a particular lens/camera combination?
Or if the camera is not a full frame camera, how about finding the equivalent Field of View of the lens on your camera to what it would be on a full frame camera?
Well, this is not a long post that goes into great detail on how to do the math. (I may follow this post up with a post like that for those that are interested in doing it by hand).
However, this post is to inform you that I have created a web-based application (No need to download an app for your phone or tablet, will work with any modern browser that has Javascript enabled) that will quickly allow you to do all of the above.
Depth of Field and Angle of View Calculator
Here's what the main page looks like:
Simply fill out the form with the appropriate Camera, Focal Length, Aperture (f/stop), and Distance from Subject using the dropdowns, so that it looks something like this:
And then hit the "Calculate" button, and you'll get the information relative to the values you entered, like this:
I just happened to use a Full Frame Camera for that first calculation, but if I now go back up to the Camera Dropdown and choose a crop sensor camera (without changing any other values) and hit "Calculate" again, notice that it now also gives me the Field Of View equivalence to a full frame for that lens on that camera:
If you choose values that result in Depth of Field being Infinite, the application will tell you that:
Likewise, if you choose values that result in a Depth of field too small to display a value for it will tell you that as well:
As a photographer, I tried to design this to be something that would be quick and easy for me to use, in the hopes that other photographers may also find it easy and useful.
I purposely designed it so that it is all displayed on one page, and the values don't get reset after each press of the "Calculate" button.
This makes it much easier to do comparisons, by changing just one value at a time, without having to go back and fill out each item separately.
It currently only has Nikon and Canon DSLRs, but I will eventually go back in and add other types of cameras.
